Patterns & takeaways

The most important decision comes before styling: is this surface for doing one thing now, or for monitoring the whole system?

The expanded set adds three distinct modes: photo-first ambient pages such as Tabliss and Bonjourr, where the wallpaper is the interface and restraint is the feature; widget-grid dashboards such as Homarr and Dashy, where tiles carry live data rather than only links; and notes-as-dashboards, where an Obsidian note plus queries becomes the launcher.

The newest references widen both ends of the spectrum: ueli, Albert, and Raycast make the launcher an overlay rather than a page; Flame and SUI turn the date and time-of-day greeting into the hero; Smashing and Grafana show glanceable, read-only boards for TVs and infrastructure; and Roam, Logseq, and Reflect organize journaling around a daily page plus linked references.

The video collection adds process and context: setup tours, comparisons, feature tutorials, and system overviews show how real users move through these layouts and workflows—not only how the finished interfaces look.

Focus-first

Show only today, hide the machinery, and keep capture within reach. Best for daily execution and low-friction personal use.

VERSUS

Overview-first

Expose the system in one glance: multiple days, databases, services, or states. Best for planning, review, and monitoring.

01

Sidebar navigation + counts

Use when stable areas such as Inbox, Today, Projects, or services need fast switching and visible load.

02

Day or week columns

Use when time is the main organizing principle and comparison across days matters more than deep detail.

03

Timeline feed

Use for journals, activity histories, and any surface where recency and narrative sequence matter.

04

Widget tile grid

Use for mixed modules with independent status: weather, timers, notes, health, services, or shortcuts.

05

Command-bar header

Use when search and capture are universal actions. One prominent field can replace several navigation layers.

06

Summary → detail pane

Use when a compact list must stay visible while one task, journal entry, or project opens into richer detail.

A recommended hybrid personal launcher

A calm “do now” surface with the breadth of a dashboard—organized so the high-frequency actions dominate and optional status stays peripheral.

The command strip earns the prime position because search, capture, and launch should work from anywhere.

The Today column protects attention by narrowing the working set to events, three priorities, and time-sized tasks.

The launch grid is broad but structured: folder tabs keep a large shortcut library from becoming visual noise.

The reflection rail keeps capture, streaks, and journaling present without competing with the day plan.

The status strip is optional and quiet; it reports exceptions rather than demanding constant attention.
